Grammar suicide chronicles my daily encounters with everything grammatically suicidal. This is not meant to laugh onto Filipinos’ ingenuous English grammar usage but is, rather, meant to induce awareness about the common Pinoy-style deviations from the proper usage of the language. (Charing!)

aLps: I don’t like Kobe, he is such a show-off. And sometimes, he plays harsh, hardcore. Kobe wants the ball so hard.
Ethel: He is just selfish.

I do not put comments under my Conversations entries. But I will state a rationale–this is the reason behind my love for conversations, I get diverse responses! This is what I learned this time–Kobe could mean two things, either he is really damn good, or he is really damn bakaw. Ooops, he could mean both too. It is just a matter of perspective.
Prejudice, for me, is an instinct. ∞
Apparently, Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA Playoffs. Yay!

This is how the shower section of our washroom looks like during early mornings, noons and late afternoons (times of the day wherein the main water pump of the subdivision is turned on). And yeah, our faucets vomit darkness in liquid form. And I want to complain!
Mother: Have you fed the dog?
Father: He won’t eat.
Mother: Why?
Father: I haven’t asked. ∞

My dad could be the most suplado person ever. And my mom tells me that I got my suplado traits from him. My dad and I could explode when we are engaged in a father-son fight: The Clash of The Two Suplados. But I know he’s a good dad, and I salute him. I may not be vocal about this appreciation but I show it in some other ways like getting nice grades in school. :D For all the dads out there, Belated Happy Fathers’ Day!
aLps: I am a person who is afraid to take risks. I always play safe. I am afraid of rejection. I always settle for what’s there and be indifferent about what’s out there. But you know what? I have realized that risks are worth taking. Whatever the outcome may be, the journey itself is the reward. A positive outcome is only a bonus.
Janelle: Wise words. I’ll do well to keep that in mind. I play safe too. The risk I was talking about was purely emotional. I’d never so much as given him the slightest hint about what I felt. Which was quite prudent of me, I’m proud to say. It saved me from greater humiliation at least. Unfortunately, that hadn’t saved me from the “what if”s that plague me now.

I found a cat nursing her young. And it was my first time to see something like this. :D
BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE!
JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.
HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure — right from Day One! — that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn’t about me…….
DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won’t realize that he must first deal with the problem on ‘THIS’ side of the road before it goes after the problem on the ‘OTHER SIDE’ of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he’s acting by not taking on his ‘CURRENT’ problems before adding ‘NEW’ problems.
OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I’m going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.
A former student sent me an mp3 file of a rendition of UP Naming Mahal, the university hymn of the University of the Philippines (UP), by progressive artists Noel Cabangon (formerly of Buklod), Cooky Chua (former lead singer of Color It Read), Chikoy Pura (lead singer of The Jerks), Gary Granada and Bayang Barrios (formerly of Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad). The new version, apparently unofficial, has new lyrics, making the hymn even more socially relevant.
For those who don’t know the history of the UP hymn, the melody was composed by Nicanor Abelardo based on a poem in English by Teogenes Veles titled “U.P. Beloved.” The latter was translated into Filipino by Hilario Rubion and Tomas Aguirre.
You can download the mp3 file of the new version of UP Naming Mahal from Mukamo Philippines. If you want to hear the choral version of the original and official UP Naming Mahal performed by the UP Concert Chorus, you may also download the mp3 file from Nhick Ramiro Pacis’ website.
In any case, please find below the lyrics of UP Beloved and the original and new version of UP Naming Mahal.
U.P. Beloved
Teogenes VelesU.P. beloved, thou Alma Mater dear
For thee united, our joyful voices hear
Far tho we wander, o’er island yonder
Loyal thy sons we’ll ever be
Loyal thy sons we’ll ever be.Echo the watchword, the Red and Green forever.
Give out the password, to the Hall of Brave sons rare.
Sing forth the message, ring out with courage
All hail, thou hope of our dear land,
All hail, thou hope of our dear land.
U.P. Naming Mahal
Hilario Rubion and Tomas AguirreU.P. naming mahal, pamantasang hirang
Ang tinig namin, sana’y iyong dinggin
Malayong lupain, amin mang marating
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin.Luntian at pula, sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipagdiwang, bulwagan ng dangal
Humayo’t itanghal, giting at tapang
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan.
U.P. Naming Mahal
New VersionU.P. naming mahal
Pamantasan ng bayan
Tinig ng masa
Ang siyang lagi nang pakikingganMalayong lupain
Di kailangang marating
Dito maglilingkod sa bayan natin
Dito maglilingkod sa bayan natinSilangang mapula
Sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipaglaban
Laya ng diwa’t kaisipanHumayo’t itanghal
Giting, tapang at dangal
Mabuhay ang lingkod ng taong bayan
Mabuhay ang lingkod ng taong bayanSilangang mapula
Sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipaglaban
Laya ng diwa’t kaisipanMalayong lupain
Di kailangang marating
Dito maglilingkod sa bayan natin

Impressions
I liked it! I actually felt a memory flashback to EDSA 1. Hehe. It actually reminded me of the original Tatsulok by Noel Cabangon. Mita told me that it has the EDSA-1-ish feeling since the performers also did perform during the People’s Revolution. And I think I could memorize this one since the music is easier to go with compare with the original, operatic version. Hehe. But I believe school hymns are played that way anyway. :D ∞
