Stressed, rushed paper. Uber basic.

Kiss Me and I Will be Crazy

Because You Kissed Me Goodnight is not your typical love poem. The poem, at the first level of analysis, would yield humor to the reader. But in a deeper level, one could see the reference and the representation. The reference means the poem’s meaning itself: What does the poem want to convey? Or what does the persona wants to tell us? The representation, on the other hand, is the thing or the tool used by the author to present the meaning of the poem i.e. the reference.

The persona began narrating his/her last few moments before going to bed. It is obvious that the actions she has done were done to the wrong receiver of the action. The same is also true when she woke up that morning. The persona told us that she felt normal again when another night came. But she is actually not. The persona refers to the kiss of someone as the reason why she is out of her normal self: All because you kissed me good night.

The reference could be the kiss’s power to drive her crazy. It wasn’t told when and where the persona got the kiss. But what’s important is the poem’s message that a single kiss from someone you love or someone you admire would really turn your world upside down. Whereas, the representation is the author’s on-purpose un-pairing of action verbs to their respective receivers (Climbed thee door, opened the stairs, etc.). If you examine the activities done by the persona before and after bedtime, they could be considered as habits. So, it is almost impossible that she can’t do them properly. The author used the persona’s crazy actions to stipulate that the persona is indeed crazy or made crazy by the kiss he/she have received. The power of the kiss is further proven to be strong when the persona told us that she already felt normal but she is actually not! This is another way the author wanted to convey the message. This time, the author wanted to state that even you tell yourself to move-on from that single kiss, it may stay to you for a very long time! Even at midnight, The sun was still bright—this could be interpreted that even before she falls into sleep, the image she was kissed is still vivid to her memories that, in turn, further proves the long-lasting effect of the kiss the persona received .
